After filming a music video at Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, Miley Cyrus said he was recently hospitalized with a knee infection, which caused doctors to weigh on how certain environments could expose people to harmful bacteria.
In a Thursday episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, Cyrus, 32, recalled the time when he filmed his visual album “Something Beautiful” and then landed at the ICU.
“I filmed this video in October [2024] In November in Thanksgiving, I was put in the ICU for a moment, only for a moment, “said the singer.
Cyrus described shooting on the sidewalk as part of his session, and shortly afterwards developed symptoms that required heavy medical care.
“I took something,” he said. “My leg began to disintegrate -to me … around the patella area. And then the doctor goes,” Do you have any idea why you would have such a brutal infection in your patella? “”
Although the singer did not reveal a specific diagnosis, medical experts say that his case is a memory of how everyday public spaces can present hidden health risks.
Marc Siegel, a clinical professor of medicine at the NYU Langone Medical Center and Senior Medical Analyst of Fox News, said that extremely aggressive bacteria are not common in urban environments.
“Bacteria that eat meat on the streets of the city are very rare,” said Siegel, who did not treat Cyrus, in Fox News Digital. “Rat urine can cause leptospirosis, a bacterium that causes flu symptoms.”
The doctor said that the probable cause was a more typical bacterial infection instead of something exotic, although common bacteria can cause severe skin reactions.
“Strep or staph bacteria are common causes of skin infection such as cellulite,” said Siegel. “Bacteria can be found [on streets]Like E. Coli, Shigella and Enterococci, which are from fecal matter, and can reach the bottom of the shoes, “he added.
These infections do not usually originate from the street, the doctor said, but can be developed when the skin comes in contact with the bacteria, which can happen during a narrow exposure to surfaces like sidewalks.
The risk of infection often increases when the skin breaks or irritates, allowing bacteria to enter the body more easily.
Even minor cuts and scratches can become a walkway for infection when exposed to contaminated surfaces, according to Dr. Ken Perry, an emergency medicine doctor in Charleston, South Carolina.
“For most patients, these infections contract from open injuries to the skin or some other breach in the skin barrier,” said Perry, who did not treat Cyrus either, told Fox News Digital.
These infections are usually easily treated with common antibiotics, according to the doctor.
Cyrus session contacted him closely with one of the most busy sidewalks in the country, which doctors say they can increase the danger.
“In the case of Miley Cyrus, he claims that he hired this after rolling on the ground during the filming of his music video,” said Perry.
“Feet traffic could easily contaminate the area with bacteria from animal sources or even human sources,” he hypothesized.
“For most of the population, shooting -on the Hollywood Paseo de Fama is not a common behavior, but even casual interaction could contact an individual with harmful bacteria,” added Perry.
Hygiene as the front line of defense
Doctors agree that basic hygiene is one of the best ways to avoid infection, especially in public spaces.
“The best way to prevent this from happening is to be annoying with hygiene,” said Perry.
“We know how to wash our hands after being in public to prevent any bacteria from being transferred to the membranes of our eyes, or even ingest bacteria.”
Experts recommend covering wounds and washing -as soon as possible if they are exposed to public environments.
“If the cut or scratch is in public, make sure -to wash -soap and water,” Perry advised. “If an individual has a cut or a little rupture on the skin, it is best to keep it covered, especially when in public.”
It is important to look for medical care if there are signs of redness, swelling or drainage, as they could be signs of a worse bacterial infection, the doctor warned.
